I have always been the person people talk to.
I’m Peter Bown, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I’ve been in practice for six years, and I work online with adults and couples across North Carolina, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, and Florida.
Long before it was a career, it was just something that happened. People told me things.
I went to school for public health because I was drawn to people and wanted to understand how minds and bodies actually work. The classes that held me were psychology, physiology, biology, and anatomy. Organic chemistry did not.
What kept pulling me back was the human side of it, and a few professors and counselors noticed before I did. On different occasions, each of them told me I’d be good at this. I took an intro class to test the idea, connected with the purpose behind the work right away, and within a semester I was on this path.
What convinced me wasn’t helping in the abstract. It was the modalities, the real mechanics of how change happens in a person, and the chance to build something of my own around them.
How I got here
Six years, two states, and a practice that mostly built itself.
Intermountain Health, Utah
My first therapy job was with Intermountain Health, as a primary mental health therapist for their employees and their families. It ran on a short-term model, which is a great model, although it can be a real constraint when someone is only just getting to the thing underneath the thing.
The people who wanted to keep going
Clients who needed longer than the model allowed started asking whether they could keep seeing me. I built My Home Counseling to offer that same quality of care to individuals and couples wherever they are.
Raleigh, North Carolina
In 2025 my wife and I moved across the country with our family, for the adventure of it more than anything else, and the practice came with us.
Now
I’m licensed in North Carolina, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, and Florida, and I see adults and couples. I keep the week deliberately unfull, so that nobody is being processed and I’m not running on empty by Thursday.
What I actually believe about this
Nothing you do is random, even the parts that make no sense to you.
Emotions and behaviors make sense once we understand what they’re trying to accomplish. That’s the sentence I keep coming back to, and it changes what therapy is for. We’re not here to get rid of a feeling or to talk you out of a reaction. We’re here to find out what it’s doing for you, and then to work out what else could do that job at a lower cost. That’s usually where the relief and the freedom come from, and where people start to feel more in control.
I’m trained in IFS, which starts from the same place: the part of you that pushes and the part that shuts down are each protecting something worth protecting. Alongside that I use ACT and CBT for the thinking and the avoiding, DBT skills for the moments your body gets there before your thinking does, and motivational interviewing for when part of you wants the change and part of you isn’t sure yet.
I care about helping people find real understanding, healing, and peace, and I hold myself to a high standard for what that looks like in practice. I’m not here to hand you a worksheet and call it a plan.
We work within our realm of control, and we get curious about the rest. How Peter describes the work
The fit
You’re looking for more than a good therapist.
You want someone who actually gets it: your life, your relationships, and what really matters to you. Picking a therapist can feel like a guessing game. How do you know who’s right for you?
Here’s the truth: your mental health and your relationships deserve real, attentive care. Not “good enough.” The best you can find. Reaching out and starting therapy already takes time, energy, and trust. So when you find the right therapist, that’s when things actually start to shift. The fit between you and your therapist isn’t a minor detail. It’s the thing that makes the work work, and that is exactly the principle behind My Home Counseling.
This tends to go well when
You’re willing to look at your own patterns, even the unflattering ones. You want to understand why something keeps happening rather than just be told to stop it. You’re tired enough of the current arrangement to try something else, and honest enough to say what isn’t working so we can adjust together.
I’m probably not your person if
What you want is for me to fix someone else, or to confirm that the problem is entirely outside of you. I’m not the referee. If you’re in crisis or need a level of care beyond weekly outpatient therapy, I’ll tell you that plainly and help you find the right place instead of keeping you on my calendar.
If you’re not sure which of those you are, that’s what the consultation is for. Fifteen minutes usually settles it.
Let’s talk for fifteen minutes
No paperwork and no commitment. Just a conversation, so you can get a feel for how I work and decide from there.
